Recycled Materials

The standard rPET Macpac uses has an ABA structure where the A layer is virgin and the core B layer contains a large proportion of recycled post consumer waste and post process waste. Typically, this would be at least 50% Post Consumer Recyclate and up to 30% Post Industrial Recyclate ie. We send in-house edge trims, scrap reels and skeletal waste back to our supplier to be reincorporated into our material.

Our material has been tested in accordance with the requirements of the Plastic Materials and Articles in Contact with Food Commission Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 following methods BSEN 1186:2002

rPET is biologically and chemically inert.

This material is 100% recyclable, following recycling directives EN 13430:2004 and EN 13431:2004.

Our energy usage is closely monitored, not just for environmental reasons but also for obvious commercial reasons. The more energy we waste, the more our costs increase, the less competitive we become. To permit us to stay competitive we have invested in the latest machinery with the latest efficiencies allowing our prices to be as low as possible.

In 2017 we updated our chillers to Air blast coolers reducing energy required from 272,592 kWh to 18,076 kWh a reduction of 93% in energy usage.

Macpac have carried out an extensive analysis of the energy required to run its compressor systems which in 2018 led to the replacement of the existing systems. By doing this our energy requirement was reduced from 211,335 kWh to 88,766 kWh which is a saving of 58% over 12 months.

In 2016 we began upgrading the heating elements on our machines from white HTS to black HTS-s which uses up to 23% less energy whilst being more stable and offering much faster warmup times. This in turn means less material wastage and improved quality.

Since 2016 we have been replacing our lighting and installing LED lighting because it is much more energy efficient.

ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL

Macpac run a value creation process, as with all processes thermoforming generates a certain degree of waste, however at Macpac 100% of this waste is granulated and returned to our suppliers for reprocessing allowing us to reuse this material again and again.

In 2018 we decided to improve recycling processes in our manufacturing site and sales office.

This involved extensive work in developing quantifiable processes with our recycling partners.

Our Quality Assurance Team has been able to monitor our monthly performance and we are now proud to say that as of January 2019 we have achieved Zero Waste to landfill. With only 0.7% of our waste ending up as ‘general waste’ and sent to an Energy From Waste plant.

Turning waste into a resource is part of closing the loop in circular economy systems.

We are currently purchasing 40% renewable energy with a goal of increasing that to 50% by Jan 2022 and 100% by Jan 2025.

Socially responsible packaging should help to ensure product safety, protect medical supplies, preservation of products and hygiene, prevent food waste and minimise environmental impacts.

We work with our customers to help them make informed decisions on material choice and design so that the end product that reaches the consumer is as recyclable as possible whilst remaining fit for purpose, this includes downgauging designs where possible to reduce weight, which in turn reduces cost and improves sustainability while maintaining performance. Often the focus is on primary packaging but sometimes by reducing the primary packaging may mean you need additional protection from your secondary or tertiary packaging therefore you might actually increase overall packaging!

The right packaging solution is needed to prevent products from being damaged during transit, this is one of the reasons we design bespoke packaging, we can create compact designs which maximise on space in distribution therefore reducing transport and fuel costs also lowering your carbon footprint too.

When end users recycle our packaging it has the potential to feed a closed-loop scheme to be used in the same quality application and preventing it from ever becoming waste.

The Sustainable Development Goals

As part of our commitment to sustainability at Macpac we wanted to align our goals with a global initiative. The sustainable development goals were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. Aligning with the SDGs in the right way shows that as a company we understand the context of our desired impact and our role in the greater global effort.

The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be “a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. These are applicable to everyone from a small business to a country. These are the goals which are most important to us.
