As a customer of Macpac and a user of plastic packaging you may or may not be aware of the up-coming Plastic Packaging Tax. The Government is set to introduce a Plastic Packaging Tax as of April 2022. The New legislation is aiming to play a role in reducing the amount of virgin plastics used in packaging and increase the amount of recycled plastics used in packaging. The new tax will only apply to any plastic packaging manufactured in the UK or imported from outside the UK that contains less than 30% recycled plastic.
The good news for Macpac customers purchasing packaging made from recycled materials (R-PET) is that our R-PET material that we use already contains at least 80% recycled content. The material is made up of post-industrial and post-consumer waste.

The idea behind this new tax is to encourage the greater use of recycled plastics in packaging minimising the unnecessary use of virgin material and encourage new packaging development focusing on the use of material with a higher recycled content. The benefit going forward means that we will need a greater recovery of plastic waste so we can convert back into packaging this reducing the amount of plastic packaging ending up in landfill or incineration and the reduction in virgin material content.
- The Plastic Packaging Tax is due to come into effect on April 1st 2022.
- All plastic packaging manufactured in the UK or imported will be liable for the tax unless it is shown to have at least 30% recycled content.
- Both post industrial waste (waste from the packaging manufacturer’s process) – and post-consumer waste (recycled bottles and trays from kerb-side collection) can be used to make up the 30% recycled content.
- This will apply on top of current PRN costs if you are obligated and, in the future, it will be on top of the producer’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) & Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) costs which are both scheduled for implementation in 2023.
