The emphasis is on food miles, carbon footprint, shelf life and country of origin but what about the packaging and its country of origin? Little thought is given to where that packaging was manufactured and how far it has come and whether or not the same environmental standards apply e.g. at least 90% recycled content. An example of good practice is Macpac and the seafood industry – bespoke packaging made in the UK to a high environmental standard with 90% recyclate in the blend complementing the rigorous environmental demands of the Marine Stewardship Council.
